From throwing out unwanted items to using a surplus of bubble wrap and plastic bags, moving creates tons of waste each year. George Moving & Storage is a Pittsburgh, PA moving and storage company that believes in giving back to our local communities. One of the ways we do this is by thinking consciously about the effects moving can have on the environment during our residential and commercial moving services. We’ve created a list of green moving methods you can use when planning an environmentally friendly move this Spring!
Declutter Your Home Before Packing
The first step in any efficient move is to declutter your house before you begin to pack. Think about if you need or want the items, you’re bringing with you into your new home. Spring cleaning is a good way to get rid of belongings that are taking up unnecessary space. Some environmentally friendly ways to declutter include:
- Donate: Donate Items you don’t use anymore or clothing that no longer fits. This way someone else can give it a new life and it can stay out of landfills.
- Upcycle: Repurpose old items into something new. Stained clothes can become useful cleaning rags, while glass bottles can be cleaned and used to hold something else. Think of creating ways an item can be reused before throwing it out.
- Repair: Not all broken items need to be thrown out. Torn clothes can be patched or sewn, while some electronics just need a new wire.
George Moving is proud to work with Habitat for Humanity during our relocation services. If you have items, you don’t want anymore, our local movers will gladly take them with us and bring them to a local ReStore to be reused by someone else. Not only do you save money by not having to move these items, but you help the community and can even claim a tax deduction.
Pack Efficiently with Recyclable Containers
Instead of using brown cardboard boxes or large plastic bags for your relocation, consider ways you can use your own recyclable containers. Plastic storage bins, clean hampers, purses, and suitcases are already coming with you, so use them to carry smaller items. Stuff your purses with scarves or wallets and keep your holiday decorations in their storage bin. Consider cutting down on bubble wrap by wrapping some of your items in clothes to prevent waste. Many residential movers use blankets and reusable pads. If you opt to buy new boxes, try to find ones that are easily recyclable.
Prepare for After the Move
Spring cleaning and environmental consciousness don’t stop when your move does. Consider switching to energy-efficient lighting when you replace your bulbs. Instead of deep cleaning your new home with loads of paper towels and dangerous cleaners, opt for eco-friendly cleaning products that are just as efficient with less dangerous effects. Spring cleaning is a good way to start fresh in your new home.
