Spring in Pittsburgh means that fresh air … is in the air! And what better way to get moving than to move on out of Pittsburgh into the surrounding area? As the cold weather of winter winds down, wildflowers are exploding, waterfalls are cascading, and we’re all in to try exploring.
Where are the best places to head? We took a cue from the friendly travel bloggers at Discovertheburgh.com, who’ve crafted this list of the top things to do in springtime in and around Pittsburgh.
First, try to squeeze in a hike. Did you know that Allegheny County itself is home to nine different county parks? Boasting more than 12,000 acres and over 70 miles of trails, southwestern Pennsylvania is brimming with all the naturally green spaces one could want. For a brief hike, consider a visit to Beechview-Seldom Seen Greenway, Fall Run Park, or the Emerald Trail on Mount Washington.
Next, take to a bike.
Bike Share Pittsburgh, Inc. is a non-profit bike network that is dedicated to creating and expanding connections throughout Pittsburgh via bicycles. If a more structured bike tour is your speed, Bike the Burgh Tours provides a variety of options you’ll love. According to their website, whether you’re new to the area or have been around the ‘Burgh for a while, you’ll learn incredible details about this historic city as you pedal through. Try the food and drink tour, which stops by numerous breweries, or the bridges in the Burgh tour if architecture is more your thing. Visit biketheburgh.com for more information.
Option three: Make your way to an abundance of indoor greenery. Get tickets for a memorable visit to the historic Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for a Flower Show visit (now through April 16).
Point State Park
Located downtown at the tip of what’s known as the Golden Triangle (where the three local rivers meet), Point State Park is the perfect gathering place as the weather heats up. Relax by the 150-foot fountain, catch a concert or an art festival, or walk the riverview trails. This is the spot to be for that community feeling in the heart of a bustling city.
