A Mid-winter’s Dream in Pittsburgh

Making the most of warm sunny in the summertime is many a Pittsburgher’s dream. But how about the winter months? Does the snow and cool temperatures keep you from having fun and making memories? In case you wondered, it definitely doesn’t have to prevent you from making merry!

There’s plenty to do to keep moving in and around Pittsburgh during winter, that snowy season that lives between December and March on the calendar. A few ideas that might pique your interest include our “best of” lists below.

For the nature lover and outdoor enthusiast—

  • Try your hand at ice skating at PPG Place in downtown Pittsburgh or the South Park Ice Skating Rink at Bethel Park, an Allegheny County Park.
  • Get out of the city and head to the mountains. One to try: Seven Springs Mountain Resort.
  • Boyce Park offers skiing, snowboarding, and snow tube options if you wish to get moving but still stay a little closer to the city.

For the sports fan—

  • Even if the Steelers haven’t gone far into the playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins bring professional hockey competition to the area. And they were back-to-back Stanley Cup champions in 2016-17!
  • Take a tour for behind-the-scenes access to some of your favorite teams. Whether that’s at PNC Park for the major league baseball Pittsburgh Pirates, at PPG Paints Arena to see the pro hockey NHL Pittsburgh Penguins, or the Acrisure Stadium featuring the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor.
  • Check out the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, which “tells the stories of Pittsburghers who became champions and champions who became Pittsburghers.” Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn more, here.

For families—

  • Visit the newest Moonshot Museum for out-of-this-world insights into the quest to explore space. Guests can engage in lively debate, tap their design skills, and highlight important missions and geography.
